Mandy Knight

Inspired comedy” – Time Out

Once described as “as frisky as a terrier on heat”, Mandy Knight is a true dame of British stand-up comedy.

The first female comedian to compere that bastion of old-school stand-up The Comedy Store, our Mandy has been breaking down barriers all her life.

After a traumatic childhood of abuse and social uncare, she attended the famous Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. After becoming fully-trained as a classical actress, and then using her diploma to spend four years in the traditional acting alternative career as a waitress, Mandy Knight decided to ditch the period frocks and the pinafore and enter the world of stand up comedy. When asked why, Mandy said it was due to an irrational fear of a life in fringe theatre, exploring her inner child by pretending to be an oak tree, a fridge or a tambourine.

It is a decision she has never regretted. After almost 20 years as a comedian, Mandy Knight remains one of the most respected and loved stand-ups in the business by both fellow comics, promoters and punters alike.

As a stand up Mandy Knight has headlined all over the world and has deservedly scooped the Best Female Comedian title at a host of different awards ceremonies over the years, including most recently the Time Out Best Female Comic gong.

A brilliant compere, host and stand-up, as well of course as an actress, she has used her combined talents to perform three one-woman shows in Edinburgh, London and Sydney with the brilliant titles of I Might Be Single – but The Voices Keep Me Company , Some of My Best Friends are Ginger and “I’m In Love with the Singer from Pulp.

Also as an actress, Mandy Knight appeared as one of the main characters in Jo Brand’s popular TV series Like it or Lump it and worked with David Baddiel on his series The Baddiel Syndrome.

Other television credits include hosting Live Time, a magazine type show a la Richard and Judy but without the smugness or falling out breasts, where she held riveting interviews with people about things like National Cheese Week. Mandy Knight has also written for various other television shows, including another smug pair in Des and Mel and appeared on The Little Big Woman Radio Show.

What draws many people to top comedienne Mandy Knight, on stage, screen and radio, is the personal nature of much of her comedy as in between the laughs she shares with the audience some of her memories of a less happy past that included alcoholism, drugs and relationship train-wrecks. But, as the lady says, it wasn’t all laughs…

And although those past demons are still with her, but now they appear on stage as a supporting cast in a comedy routine that has taken her around the world and back again.

Mandy Knight has even put her past pain into print, both via the amusing blogs and tweets on her delightful website but, in greater detail, in a new book where she recounts her dark days, as an angry and abused little girl turned drama school wild child, to the alcoholic who wished for cancer as more acceptable way out than cancer.

But if all that’s sounds too depressing, the journey back from the bottom and ending up on the top of a tree as much-loved comedian is a joy to behold.

Mandy Knight, dame of British comedy … god bless her.
